Project Title: Tackling the hidden epidemic of non-communicable disease in sub-Saharan Africa: Else Kröner Center for Heart and Lung Disease - Services, training and health education - A new center of excellence for Tanzania

Project Description: In sub-Saharan Africa, awareness of hypertension, heart failure, and obstructive lung diseases such as asthma and COPD is low despite their high morbidity and mortality. In order to prevent these diseases, and to increase the number of diagnosed and correctly treated patients, we plan to build the Else Kröner Center for Heart and Lung Disease (EKC-HLD) in rural Tanzania, targeting a population of 1 million people. The project will be organized around four main pillars: i) Clinical services, ii)Training, education, and research, iii) Community health and outreach activities and management. The overall impact is to increase local access to specialized healthcare for chronic heart and lung diseases, as well as health education for the prevention of disease for rural populations in the target region.
